Nick Clearwater put together a very nice analysis of teen phenom Lexi Thompson for Ralph over at Gotham: In the video, there is a rear view of Lexi that shows some interesting, and unusual, things with her hips as she comes into impact. Lexi on the left, Jamie on the right. At this point, you can see that Jamie has more right side lateral bend: compared to Lexi, his right shoulder is closer to his waist and the right elbow is closer to his belt. Lexi's upper and lower bodies are as a result disconnected. Even though they have a similar amount of hip turn, Lexi's disconnected body allows her shoulders to stay closed while the hips are open. With the "spine gears engaged" and his body rotating as a unit, Jamie has much more rotation of the upper body. This is where Lexi starts to stall: her left hip pretty much has stopped pulling around, whereas Jamie's is still motoring. This is unusual: Lexi starts to kind of slide the left hip up and toward the target into impact, the opposite of Jamie, who keeps pulling his left hip back and away from the target. Post-impact Lexi's left hip "hits the wall" and even the right hip stops, Jamie's right hip continues to rotate toward the target. Two completely different pivots: Lexi kind of gets the lower body in position, then flings the upper body around it; Jamie has just one, big connected rotation. Jeff
